Saxophone player and Composer.
José Luis Gutierrez is one of the most refreshing and innovative musicians to appear on the Spanish musical scene.
His music is passionate, intense and personal as few others; the “killer silence” as the composer Lopez de Guereña would say.
One of the most important characteristics of his music is the influence of Iberian music, masterfully combined with the freedom of improvised music; creating a unique style called “iberjazz”, in which Iberian music is recovered and modernized in a style which denotes quality and originality.
His first record, “Núcleo”, was considered the best jazz album of the year in Spain. This fact launched Jose Luis Gutierrez´ career definitively. From that moment on he was considered one of the main, and most promising Spanish jazz musicians.
In 2011 he presents his last record, “Fruit Salad” and delves even deeper into the union of Iberian music and Jazz.
He has directed his projects in a multitude of venues around the World; Rome, Tallin, San Sebastian, Mexico, Caracas, Rio de Janeiro, Casa Blanca, etc. He has collaborated with maestros such as: Jorge Pardo, Chano Dominguez, Jerry Gonzalez, Paquito D’Rivera, Javier Colina, Carlos Barreto, Tommy Caggiani. He also has worked as a saxophone professor in the conservatory in Zamora, as well as served as a juror in various musical competitions. He has written articles in trade magazines and newspapers.
He is the artistic director of the International Jazz Festivals: Universijazz and La Granjazz.
